What is established

Richard Jewell discovered the suspicious package at Centennial Olympic Park and helped evacuate people before the July 27, 1996 bombing. He was publicly identified as an investigative suspect, was not charged with this bombing and was formally removed from suspicion on October 26, 1996. Eric Rudolph subsequently admitted responsibility. The Georgia Court of Appeals upheld judgments for the AJC and its reporters in the 2011 appeal discussed here. 2011 opinion

The article examines the distinction between the legal results and the publication's discretionary editorial choices. Its criticism of naming, framing, comparisons and follow-up is editorial analysis based on disclosed evidence.

Claim and evidence matrix
ClaimEvidentiary statusNecessary qualification
Jewell was innocent of the Olympic bombingEstablished in the sources reviewedAn arrest, prosecution or conviction of Jewell for this bombing must not be implied
AJC reported real investigative suspicionSupported by J11's findingsReal suspicion did not establish guilt or validate the underlying profile
The AJC lost Jewell's libel caseIncorrect for the litigation result examinedThe 2011 appellate court affirmed judgments for the media defendants
Scruggs had doubts about Jewell making the warning call by August 4Recorded in J11's discussion of her depositionThe article also reflected doubts. This is not proof she knew the entire accusation was false and concealed all contrary evidence
Kindred compared Jewell with Wayne WilliamsEstablished by the column and J11The court found the column nonactionable; criticism here concerns editorial judgment
The court ignored the alternate August 1 wordingIncorrectIt addressed that wording on reconsideration and left the result unchanged
Reporters' confidential sources were compelled and exposed through the final rulings discussedIncorrectDisclosure was denied on remand and the denial upheld
Officials deferred broader interviews while awaiting possible civil litigation developmentsSupported by DeFeo's testimony in H97Some investigative work had already occurred; this was not a statement that no inquiry existed
Fewer than 50 interviews had occurred at that pointDeFeo's account in H97Historical testimony, not a verified final lifetime total for all related inquiries
An FBI and AJC conspiracy caused the coverageNot establishedNo such finding is made in this article
OPR found a major error in judgment in presentation of warningsSupported by OPR testimony in H97OPR also reported no evidence of a conspiracy to deprive Jewell of constitutional rights; its review was not a judicial ruling resolving all possible constitutional issues
AJC's current code governed verbatim in 1996Not establishedUsed only as a contemporary statement of standards
Existing institutional positions

AJC defendants: Their arguments included the substantial truth of reports about investigators' beliefs, consideration of the complete articles, protection for the Kindred column and opposition to compelled disclosure of sources. The 2011 court upheld the judgments and the source discovery result. The 2019 AJC retrospective also defends the reporting. J11, AJC19

Government officials in 1997: OPR described the interview problems and the limits of its findings. FBI officials described investigative work on leaks, practical obstacles and a decision to await possible litigation developments before expanding certain work. H97

Read the Article: Richard Jewell and the Story That Survived Him

He found the bomb and helped clear the crowd. Then a newspaper identified him as the FBI's suspect. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution eventually won his libel case. The record of that victory still raises hard questions about how journalism handles the people whom official suspicion gets wrong.

What remains open

The reviewed sources do not identify a proven original leaker; establish the full final disposition of every leak inquiry; supply a complete internal editorial decision log; explain the origin of every change between article versions; or constitute an audit of every later AJC article and archive note. Those subjects require further records or attributable answers.

Method

The article is a sourced documentary examination with clearly stated editorial analysis. It draws principally from two appellate opinions and congressional testimony. Newspaper articles reproduced in the opinion were checked as context, with only short quotations used. It contains no reconstructed private conversations or invented witness interviews.
